I am always amazed by the way visitors to Bali seem reluctant to venture very far from the over-the-top tourism that exists in the south end of the island. You will find most of the tourist infrastructure, as well as most of the tourists, within four or 5 miles of Ngurah Rai airport. Well, naturally people like to relax, shop, and indulge in the nightlife when they come to holiday in Bali. That's what a vacation is supposed to be, after all.

But maybe you are looking for some serious downtime. A lot of visitors who make a small effort to drive up to the northern coast of Bali are surprised at how different, relaxed and pleasant this part of the island is. The beaches of Lovina offer a refreshing alternative to the hustle and bustle of places like Kuta and Seminyak.

I recommend getting a driver or renting a car, and heading north on the main road for a day trip, through the rice fields and over the mountains. When you get to the north coast, find yourself a nice restaurant for an early dinner near the water, and if you like what you see consider staying for a couple of days. The car rental company will be happy to extend your rental, or if you hired a driver you will have already paid him for his drive back to South Bali. Hotels in Lovina are rarely so full that you'll even need a reservation, simply find a nice bit of coastline that you like and check hotels nearby. If you would rather make reservations ahead of time, some excellent options are the Adirama Beach Hotel, which is right on the beach; the Rambutan boutique hotel (a friendly family-run establishment); the Lovina Beach Hotel, which dates from the 1950s; or the Bali Paradise Hotel, which is beautifully situated in the middle of rice fields.

One of the big attractions of the north coast of Bali is hiring a boat for an early-morning trip out to see dolphins. The ocean here is very calm for most of the year, quite unlike the beaches in the south, so it's quite safe and a wonderful way to start off the day. You will have no problems finding someone to take you out-in fact you will be asked quite frequently if you have seen the dolphins yet. No guarantee that you will see them of course, but your chances around Lovina are pretty good. The calmer waters here are also great for snorkeling and equipment is readily available for rental and very reasonably priced.

Between the slower pace and the lower prices, Bali's north coast, especially in Lovina's Beach area, is an underrated tourist destination.
